SolNit process

The SolNit process involves solution nitriding of stainless and non-acid steels. The dispersion of active nitrogen produces a high nitrogen, austenitic or martensitic case to near-net shape components with a high level of hardness, favourable residual stress and excellent corrosion properties.

The process is carried out in vacuum systems at temperatures of between 1,050 °C and 1,150 °C in a pure hydrogen atmosphere at pressures of between 100 mbar und several hundred mbar. Nitrogen case hardening depths can vary between 0.10 mm and several millimetres. The process is used in the area of plastic processing, transmission components, roller bearings for turbines, pumps, valves, surgical instruments and sanitary fittings.

At Hanomag Lohnhärterei group the SolNit process takes place in a single-chamber vacuum furnace at the Gommern plant. The furnace chamber is 910 mm wide, 1,220 mm long and 910 mm high. The maximum batch weight is 1,500 kg.


Suitable materials

High alloy, ferritic, martensitically hardenable and austenitic steels (e.g. X6Cr17, X20Cr13, X14CrMoS17, X5CrNi18-10, X2CrNiMo18-14-3, X10CrNiMoTi18-10)
